HANDWRITING PROGRAM

Over the year’s parents have contacted me to help their children with their handwriting skills in the areas of letter recognition, formation of letters; upper and lower cases, numbers, size and spacing from Pre-K through grade 6.  My approach is inclusive to meet the needs of different learners.

Children are introduced to a creative, interactive hands on experience to encourage their handwriting skills using a multisensory approach. These skills are offered for printing and cursive, in both English and French.

To enhance their handwriting skills, we provide writing utensils such as short pencils, small primary crayons and small markers which will maximize a three finger and ultimately a pincer grasp. The provision of a triangular pencil will serve to reinforce appropriate finger placement.  This will also help promote appropriate habits such as the grip used to hold their writing tools (crayon, marker, pencil, pen) and using their other hand as a stabilizer on their paper. 

We use activities and exercises that will improve and strengthen finger awareness and dexterity by using a variety of manipulatives that encourage the child’s fine motor skills such as cutting, grip activities and games while encouraging appropriate hand and finger movement.

Some activities include: 

• Drawing and copying lines and circles to imitating crosses and shapes.
• Encouraging coloring within the lines
• Bilateral hand activities and crossing mid line 
• Cutting in a forward direction and along a straight line to cutting circular patterns 
• Lacing
• Grasping and using small objects
• Board Games

Our goal is to make handwriting an instinctive, comfortable and natural skill.
